Need to build your own adapter to hook up a box with DB9 connector as a
serial terminal? Here is the correct pinout:
PC (DB9) SGI (MiniDIN8) RS-232D RJ45 description
1 cd 7 cd 2 cd carrier detect
2 rxd 5 rxd 5 rxd recieve data
3 txd 3 txd 6 txd transmit data
4 dtr 1 dtr 3 dtr data terminal ready
5 gnd 4,8 gnd 4 gnd system ground
6 dsr - 1 dsr, ri data set ready
7 rts 6 rts 8 rts request to send
8 cts 2 cts 7 cts clear to send
9 ri - 1 dsr, ri ring indicator
Notes: If you build a connector<->connector cable, use the minidin8 male
pictures (the one to the right).
If you want to use CAT5 cabling, build an adapter with MiniDIN8 male
connector and RJ45 female port.
Remember to mirror the pins while
soldering - the images show the front side of the connectors, not the
side you are soldering on!
Probably you wont need the "data set ready" and "ring indicator" pins.
