Example Multihead X11 Configurations

Matrox:
G550 DH (Dualhead card): independent | xinerama
G200 MMS (Quadhead card): independent | xinerama
Parhelia (Triplehead card): independent | hw stretched | xinerama
have a look at the examples provided by the Matrox Linux drivers (you need those drivers for newer cards / some features).

Nvidia:
Geforce dualhead cards, tested with 4x00ti, 5950 Ultra and 6600GT: independent | hw stretched | xinerama
Quadro: same as Geforce. Maybe some additional options like these are needed (from QuadroFX 1100 config).

Ati:
Radeon dualhead cards, tested with 9800 and 7000: independent | hw stretched | xinerama
Radeon 7000DH w/ 2x SGI 1600SW: xinerama

combinations of cards:
Matrox G550 DH + G200 MMS (six-screen config!): independent | xinerama
Matrox G400 AGP + ATI Mach64 PCI: independent | xinerama
Matrox G200 AGP + ATI Rage 128 PCI: independent
Nvidia 6600GT + 5200 PCI: xinerama

sgi IRIX, Sun Solaris, HP HP-UX:
plug in several (supported) cards, hook up monitors and boot. Configuration should be done automatically.
tested successfully with a sgi Octane (SSI+SE) nad IRIX 6.5.


examples are intended to be modified / mixed. configs are similar for other cards of the same manufacturer.
note: some older PCI cards / bios'es need to initialize the PCI slot graphics first in order get the PCI card working (int10h required).

information about linux support (including XF86Config-4 / xorg.conf), video overlay (mplayer -vo xv) / 3D / OpenGL support in different modes (independent, hw stretched, xinerama), supported analog/digital resolutions and so on for the following cards:
- newer Matrox cards (APVe, QID, QID pro, HR256, DL256)
- latest ATI FireGL, Nvidia Quadro and 3Dlabs Wildcat cards (same as above)

glossary:
independent: all screens are independent, no window movement from screen to screen. only mouse and keyboard focus can move around.
hw stretched: one big desktop. virtual screen via driver. sometimes with DRI.
xinerama: one big desktop. done via X11. no DRI.
